Most of the club dance moves I teach are meant to be done as transitions. What it means is that you don’t repeat one movement over and over again - you might look stuck or a bit unnatural doing so. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Instead, just use it once or twice in between other movements in your freestyle. Do you ever find it hard to find the beat in a song? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Or what to do when there’s no beat in the beginning?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Integral part of dance is musicality. That’s why it is important for you to train your ear. And absolutely everyone can do that, pretty much anytime. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Whenever you listen to music, identify the snare - the “clap” or “snap” sound (separate it from other layers). With practice, you’ll find it easier and easier to do. After a while you won’t have to focus on actively listening for the beat - it will happen automatically. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Keep in mind that in a lot of songs, the snare doesn’t come in right away. Take this song for example. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ‘Off The Ground’ - Bit Funk⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ You’ll hear a loud snare coming in but only after 0:25. So what do you do for the first 25 seconds? Good news: doesn’t matter 😄 you can treat it as a little intro: sway a bit to the melody, to the vocals. When learning how to dance you might have heard of such terms as coordination or muscle movement memory. But there’s something else that develops and strengthens as we are learning how to dance.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Proprioception. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It’s defined as the acquisition and retention of kinesthetic sensation which helps the body to remember what a given movement feels like. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ What does it mean?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We learn how to dance (like anything physical, e.g. playing tennis) through proprioception which is one of the human senses. To put it simply, it is the sense of the orientation of your limbs in space. Learning how to dance requires a bit of a thought process. By a thought process I don’t mean a chatter box that’s going on constantly in your head 🤫 It’s just you reacting to your surroundings. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Instead, respond to them by analyzing what’s happening at the moment in your learning process. Ask yourself these questions: ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ - Am I dancing on beat? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ - Are my movements the right size? Am I exaggerating? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ - Do I look relaxed?
